History
Founded in the late sixties, the “University of York Film Society”, as we were known then, was little more than group of art-house boffins and Fellini enthusiasts with an old 16mm projector operating out of a pokey room in Heslington Hall.
Our first ever film was screened on the 28th of April, 1968 (it was called Two Way Stretch).
York Film Society ran on the basis of a £15 membership fee for all films for the year.
The films were shown on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays, and "Exposure" was initially called "Much Acclaimed".
Meetings were held in Langwith Bar.
The society quickly became too large to stay within those limited confines, and so we expanded into one of the largest rooms on campus, Central Hall.
After winning the BFFS Film Society of the Year Award in 1981, we had a bit of trouble in 1986, showing only one film a week on a 16mm projector, and were £1500 in debt.
However, we got through it, and in 1988 not only won the BFFS Film Society of the Year Award again, but had about 300 members and 4900 overall attendance for Autumn term films!
On Sunday 22nd May 1988, we had our first ever showing on a new 35mm projector, which replaced the older 16mm and 9.5mm projectors. The film chosen for the big opening was Hope and Glory.
In 1990, we installed a brand-new screen (at a cost of £4000), and won the BFFS Film Society Runner Up award.
In Autumn 1991, we installed a Dolby Digital Surround Sound system, and in 1992 we won the BFFS Film Society of the Year Award again.
After our 1993 nomination for Film Society of the Year, we hosted the BFFS annual conference in 1994!
In 1995, we changed brand from York FilmSoc to today's York Student Cinema, based, as it is today, in P/X/001.
During the summer of 1999, the cinema closed its doors for a full term whilst P/X/001 had a complete (much needed) makeover.
In May 2002, we hosted the York Independent Film Festival, and in June we upgraded from our much loved, but tragically dying, 1988 Kalee Model 20 projector to a second hand Victoria 5 35mm projector, which is still with us to this day (although we don't use it too much anymore!)
In 2013, we began selling refreshments to complete the cinematic experience, and in 2014 won the YUSU Society of the Year award.
At the Love York Awards in 2015, we won Committee of the Year!
Through the years, our name has changed, our logo has been refined, and our base of operations has grown with us.
We now have our own room specifically designed for use with our projection equipment and full Dolby Digital surround sound system – P/X/001 in the Physics, Engineering and Technology building.
York Student Cinema is one of the top student cinemas in the UK, and despite all of our changes, our fundamental raison d'être has not changed.
We are, and always have been, a cinema run by students, for students, staff, and the public alike.
We bring you films from all over the world, from shining blockbusters to underrated obscurities alike, from action to romance, from laughs to screams, from fact to fiction, giving us all the opportunity to see films that we may not find anywhere else!
