Broken Embraces

One of the most highly anticipated films of this year sees Penelope Cruz return to her Spanish acting roots in Pedro Almodóvar’s Broken Embraces. Set in Madrid, Almodóvar’s take on film noirs of the 40s and 50s follows the story of Harry Caine (Lluís Homar), a blind ex-director-turned screenwriter, Lena (Penélope Cruz) a would-be actress, and her millionaire lover, Martel (José Luis Gómez).

The plotline surrounds the behind-the-scenes escapades of the making of Mateo’s last film, “Girls and Suitcases,” in which Lena starred. Unbeknownst at the time to the director and his actress, the jealous millionaire produced an ultra-personal ‘making of’ documentary following the pair around, capturing the growing attraction, fiery passion, and ultimate tragedy of their relationship.
Fourteen years on the ex-director is revisiting old wounds to finally resolve what went wrong.

Full of more twists and turns than most well-crafted thrillers, Broken Embraces is a visual treat - it is a gorgeous, sexy and thoroughly enjoyable masterpiece from a true legend of Spanish cinema.
