Inglourious Basterds

"Once upon a time in Nazi occupied France..."

Meet the Basterds, a team of Jewish-American soldiers hell-bent on wreaking havoc behind enemy lines during World War II. The ruthless gang roam through Nazi-occupied France with a vengeance, planning to take out as much of the enemy as possible, often in the bloodiest of ways. Soon, however, with the help of British intelligence, they set their sights even higher, to the ending of the War itself.

News gets out of the premiere of a German propaganda film which could receive attendance from some of the most infamous figures in the Third Reich. Little do they know that the cinema owner already has her own reasons for a revenge to take place on the same evening, with the memory of her lost family never far from her mind. Nor have they met Hans Landa, an important German colonel who’ll be in charge of Nazi security on the night, and whose terrifying intelligence may just be the Basterds’ match.

Quentin Tarantino returns full throttle to the big screen with a film that manages to be vastly enjoyable and immensely intelligent. His trademark irresistible dialogue receives a multilingual treatment from the fantastic European talent of Christoph Waltz, Michael Fassbender and Mélanie Laurent, giving electrifying, intense performances that compliment the comedy of Brad Pitt and Mike Myers. Tarantino glouriously engages with the wartime and post-war film industry, featuring a soundtrack recalling Spaghetti Westerns, and character names (as well as the film title) stolen from more obscure pulp cinema. The film plays with our conception of history, toys with the conventions of narrative and pays tribute to the power of cinema to challenge and entertain.
