Up

Having won the Worst Technical Difficulties of 2009 award, YSC is glad to announce that, following on from its cancellation last term (and due to exceptionally high demand), we’ll be showing Up to kick off the 2010 season!

78 year old balloon salesman Carl Fredricksen has always longed to go on an adventure to South America, and he finally fulfills his dream by tying thousands of balloons to his house, allowing it to fly away. However, much to Carl’s chagrin, he discovers he has a stowaway on board in the form of 8 year old Russell, an overly eager Wilderness Explorer who is determined to get his Assisting-the-Elderly badge.

The films emerging from Disney’s Pixar have gone from strength to strength, and its latest offering, Up, doesn’t break that trend. The fact that for the first time in history an animated film was chosen to open the Cannes film festival this year shows how Pixar have become known for their storytelling. Up is a gem of a film, thought by some to be Pixar’s finest offering yet.

The story creates a mix of emotions, containing the sad disappointments of an old man, but also numerous laugh-out-loud moments, such as the hilarious talking dog. This terrific adventure blends old-fashioned Disney charm with incredible modern animation. It’s already been out in the States for a while, where it was incredibly well-received (and is Pixar’s second highest grossing film domestically, after Finding Nemo) so don’t miss your chance to see Up when it finally comes to the UK, as this delightful film will please audiences of all ages.
