Undoubtedly one of the best films of 2009, The Hurt Locker follows a bomb disposal unit as they carry out their life-threatening work in Iraq. The story commences in the early stages of the ongoing war with the reckless but brilliant Sgt. William James assuming the position of team leader of an Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit. Along with Sgt. J.T. Sanborn and Specialist Owen Eldridge, he does a job often overlooked, but deadly nonetheless: the disarming of explosive devices. The film not only documents the treacherous nature of their work brilliantly, but it also gives an insight into the emotional strains of war; James’s maverick approach to his job affects his colleagues and creates friction within the team.
Jeremy Renner (28 Weeks Later) plays the lead to perfection, with Anthony Mackie (8 Mile) and Brian Geraghty (Jarhead) providing brilliant supporting performances. Under Kathryn Bigelow’s direction, the film excites and keeps you on the edge of your seat, while also retaining a gritty realism, providing a sobering look into the everyday dangers of being part of a bomb disposal unit in the Middle East. From start to finish The Hurt Locker packs a powerful punch of excitement and emotion. With a spate of awards under its belt, including Best Film at the Venice Film Festival, and universal critical acclaim, it is not one to be missed.
