Jennifer Check and Anita “Needy” Lesnicki have been friends forever, despite having very little in common; Jennifer is the high school queen, whereas Needy is more of a wallflower. After the two attend a gig at the local bar, a mysterious fire rages, after which Jennifer ends up being taken away in a van by the band members. Later, she turns up at Needy’s doorstep, covered in blood, with an insatiable appetite. Something’s extremely wrong, but Needy just doesn’t know what. As boys in the high school start dying and Jennifer’s behaviour becomes suspicious, Needy begins to uncover the true man-eating ways of her best friend. She realises she needs to take action before anyone else gets hurt, above all her own boyfriend, Chip, who she fears is the next victim.
Jennifer’s Body is a brilliant mix of comedy and horror, with a sharp script courtesy of the incredibly talented Diablo Cody of Juno fame. It takes on the traditional high-school movie format with an evil twist, injecting new life into the genre. Megan Fox believably slips into the role of the high school bitch, commanding attention whenever on screen, and Amanda Seyfried’s doe-eyed Needy goes through such a transformation that you can’t help but root for her. With a perfect balance of laughs and shocks playing off each other, this may be the best teen black comedy you see in a while.
