A Serious Man

A Serious Man is the latest film to be written and directed by The Coen Brothers (also known for Burn After Reading, No Country for Old Men and The Big Lebowski).

The plot is based around Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg), a Jewish professor of physics and a family man. However, his life is more than unfortunate – his wife Judith (Sari Lennick) wants a divorce, so she can leave him to be with a widowed family friend with whom she is having an affair. As well as this one major blow, Larry has a pile of other problems; his son smokes marijuana and owes money to his dealer, his daughter is stealing money from him to get a nose job, his brother’s been sleeping on his sofa for several months, and one of his students is trying to bribe him for a better grade. In an attempt to find out where it all went wrong, Larry turns to his faith for advice from three rabbis, only to be turned away with no further answers or understanding of life, the universe and everything.

How will things turn out for Larry Gopnik? Will things go from bad to worse, or is the future bright? A Serious Man is currently generating huge Oscar buzz, and looks set to receive nominations for the 2010 awards season.
