We pick up with Frodo and Sam continuing their journey alone to Mordor. On the way, they put their trust in a most unusual choice of guide, Gollum, who Gandalf did say had a significant role to play. Sam immediately mistrusts this newcomer; Frodo seems more accepting, perhaps due to their common bond of the ring, possessed before Bilbo by Gollum.
Although the burden of the ring is increasing for Frodo, Sam remains as loyal as ever. What’s left of the fellowship – Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli – set off to rescue Merry and Pippin. On their way they meet the White Wizard, but the legend is not exactly who they expected it to be. The group go on to Rohan, forging new allies who they join in battle against the forces of Sauron.
This is a story of two halves where, in order to prevail, both groups must succeed. The characters show epic bravery, and the film records their heroic struggle against evil with terrific urgency. The film’s climax at Helm’s Deep is astounding, as Jackson continues the trilogy with an increasingly dark atmosphere and battle-filled scenes. The large-scale finale is tremendous, immersing the viewer right in the middle of the most bloody of conflicts. Don’t miss your chance to see the fight for Middle Earth this term at YSC.
