In the distant future, on a planet called Pandora, humanity is waging war on a native species called the Na’vi in an effort to secure a vital energy source. A new strategy for humanity in this epic confrontation is the use of Avatars, essentially human beings disguised as na’vi by combining human DNA with that of the natives. Jake Sully, a paraplegic war veteran, joins this project and through his new Avatar body is able to walk again, as he spies on the planet’s inhabitants to learn about their culture and their weaknesses.
Though initially fully devoted to his mission, Jake changes his mind after witnessing firsthand the destruction and mass slaughter forced upon the Na’vi by his own army’s troops, and comes to see them as a peaceful species forced into war by humans. He turns the tables by allying himself with the young Na’vi girl Neytiri, and by using vital human intelligence to lead them in an epic battle to defend their homeland from the human invasion.
In the first film in over 10 years to be written and directed by James Cameron, who has previously brought us hits such as The Terminator, Aliens and Titanic, we are shown an alien world using highly innovative special effects in this intense science-fiction epic.
