This term at YSC, Sherlock Holmes finally makes it to the big screen for the 21st century. Robert Downey Jr. brings a new depth and charisma to the character of Sherlock Homes, the Victorian super-sleuth, jumping out from the pages of the novels and short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
An action-packed, well-written script follows Holmes and Dr. Watson (Jude Law), who often share impeccably timed comedic repartee as they chase after a new foe, the mysterious Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong), in the London streets of 1891. Downey Jr. pulls off a flawless English accent while injecting comedy and intellect into the role, as well as showing a fighting, bare-knuckle brawling spirit to the character rarely seen in the work of over 70 actors before him. Rachel McAdams plays the strong-minded adversary and love interest Irene Adler, the only known woman to have ever bested Holmes.
Be assured that director Guy Ritchie (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, RocknRolla) will not disappoint fans of the best-known fictional detective of all time. The film provides the energy and visual creative style known in Ritchie movies, but carries the budget of a must-see, box office hit.
