The YSC Committee

Organisation

The committee is organised into two sections:

What Do I Need To Do?

To become a member of the committee, first become an Ordinary Member. This involves attending three committee meetings, and then being voted on by the attending committee.

To gain one of the named positions you need to be an Ordinary Member, and then run for the position in the AGM (Annual General Meeting). You can run for as many positions as you like, and you will be able to vote in any position you don't run for. For more details on the meeting, see below.

What are the Committee Positions?

This is a list of the usual committee positions, along with brief descriptions of their roles. Some of the positions are mentioned specifically in the constitution, and relevant quotes from it are included.

Chair

... who is responsible for co-ordinating and directing overall policy for the operation of YSC.

The Chair is the person who deligates responsibilty, gets people cooperating and generally keeps YSC running. They also chair meetings of the General Committee and the Executive Committee.

Secretary

... who is responsible for the booking of films, general administration duties and external communications.

The Secretary organises films, takes and publishes the minutes for the Committee meetings. The Secretary is the face of YSC to the outside world.

Treasurer

... who is responsible for authorising financial transactions on behalf of the general and executive committees.

The Treasurer is in charge of YSC's budget; they authorise payments for large things (like new screens) and small things (like new stamps). It is also their job to present the budget at the AGM.

House Manager

(Usually two.)

... who are responsible for organising front of house duties for each YSC performance, and for the training of subsequent house managers.

The House Managers are in charge of the 'front of house' side of YSC. They sell the tickets, take the money and make sure customers are happy! It is also their responsibility to make announcements to the audience (but not the start-of-term speech - that's the Chair's job!)

Chief Projectionist

(Usually two.)

... who are responsible for organising the projection rota, the training and qualification of projectionists, and for maintaining a consistently high standard of projection.

The Chief Projectionist's job is in three parts: it is their job to sort out the adverts and trailers; they train new projectionists; and one Chief Projectionist must be in attendance at every film - just in case something goes wrong! It is also the Chief Projectionist's job to sort out who is projecting which film, and make sure every film is made up and broken down.

Chief Technical Officer

... who is responsible for ensuring that all of YSC's equipment is in effective working order, and that any installation or updating of equipment is properly carried out.

The Chief Tech is the person who makes sure that everything works! They are in charge of fixing anything that goes wrong if they can, or getting someone in if they can't. Much of the Chief Tech's job can be taught, but you really need a good feel for the equiptment to do this job.

Exposure Editor

(Usually two.)

...who are responsible for the production and editing of the termly YSC programme Exposure!

Exposure Editors are responsible for the designing, writing and printing of Exposure. Everyone at YSC is encouraged to write reviews for the films we will show next term, which the Exposure Editors then edit; any reviews left over they write. They also write all the other material in Exposure, like the letter from the Editors, the quiz and the quotes page. Basically the entire content and layout of Exposure is up to them!

Press and Publicity Officer

(Usually two or more.)

[The head of the P&P Team] is ultimately responsible for the publicising of all YSC events, and in charge of all members of the publicity team.

The Press and Publicity team are in charge of all of YSC's publicity, from trailers to flyers in the toilets. It is their job to organise people to distribute information, change the posters for each film, and order the posters and trailers.

Webmaster

...who are responsible for the upkeep of the YSC website.

The Webmaster is in charge of keeping the York Student Cinema website up-to-date. Each term they have to enter the information for the coming term. They are also responsible for keeping the website running smoothly, and working in any improvements they want!

Slides Coordinator

...who is responsible for maintaining the YSC before show slides.

The Slides Coordinator's job consists of creating the slides for each term from the information in Exposure or on the Website. While Webmaster and Slides are separate positions, the work involved is similar and it is perfectly possible to do both jobs simultaneously.

Exposure Weekly Editor

(Usually two or more.)

... who are responsible for coordinating the production of the weekly newsletter - Exposure Weekly.

Exposure Weekly is a small newsletter that gets distributed to people before the film. It usually contains information about the films that week. The Exposure Weekly Editors design and write it.

Health and Safety Representative

...who is responsible for ensuring that YSC complies with all health and safety regulations as well as ensuring that the yearly risk assessment is carried out.

The Health and Safety Rep. is responsible for writing and maintaining the risk assessment sheets, keeping the accident book up to date, and making sure the first-aid kit(s) are stocked and safe.

Social Secretary

(Usually two.)

The Social Secretaries' job is mainly to organise and attend socials - after all, YSC is a society, and societies need socials!

Why isn't Projectionist or Review Writer on the List?

Projectionist isn't actually a committee position: anyone can project! If you want to learn, just talk to one of the Chief Projectionists to arrange some training. Similarly for review writing - everyone is encouraged to take at least one review each term so that the Exposure Editors don't have quite so many to write themselves.
